Our Time Together at Thruxton

Created by Mark 2 months ago

I had the privilege of working with Enid for seven years at Thruxton when I was press officer for the BARC, and she was my PA. She was the most wonderful colleague that anyone could ask for, and we long continued our association after her retirement when she was helping out in the Goodwood media centres.

It was so much more than just being in the office 9-5 five days a week: she often stayed on late to help out with the BARC News and race programmes when we were up against deadlines. Mick wasn't always impressed, but I would drop her home (I lived in Upper Clatford, and she in Grateley, so we were almost neighbours). She was also a great buffer between me and Syd Offord, who would fly off the handle when things weren't going well, although the real shouting matches tended to be between him and the also much-missed John Wickham!

She was more than a colleague; she was a friend too, helping out when I had childcare issues, and never forgot a birthday. What I will never forget is her smile, just as often laughing, and she always brightened up any office she was in. I know there are many journos out there who will remember her with equal affection for her firm but friendly presence in accreditation offices, and her willingness to go the extra mile to help. God bless you. Mark Cole.
